Learning how to paint is only the beginning. What matters even more is discovering your own unique visual language.

Dina Danosa is a Latvian artist, designer, graphic artist, illustrator, and visual arts educator. She holds a Master’s degree from the Art Academy of Latvia and has also gained experience in the field of animation.

In Dina’s own artwork, reality intertwines with fantasy. Her paintings are inhabited by mysterious figures, symbols, memories, dreams, and sensations from the inner world. They are works that invite you to pause, get lost in the image, and discover something new.

This approach lies at the heart of “Painting Through Surrealism.”

This is not simply a course about learning how to draw or paint correctly.

It is a creative space where you can experiment, follow your imagination, and discover what kind of art emerges when you begin trusting your feelings, intuition, and inner imagery.

During the course, you will learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting, including linear and atmospheric perspective, light and shadow, composition, and the use of colors. You will explore different artistic techniques and gradually discover which approaches best suit your own creative voice.

We will study the work of Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, contemporary surrealists, and other influential artists.

We will explore their ideas, symbols, visual language, and artistic techniques - not to copy them, but to draw inspiration from them and use that inspiration to discover your own individual style.

• What happens when you stop painting only what you see?
• What if you try to paint what you feel?
• What do you imagine?
• What appears in your dreams?
• What colors exist in your inner world?
• What symbols, characters, and stories are hidden there?

Together with Dina, you will experiment with forms and colors, explore unexpected combinations, create your own narratives, and gradually develop your own distinctive artistic voice.

Course Program*

1. “The Impossible Shadow”

An introduction to the fundamentals of drawing, including form, light, and shadow. You will draw a real object while giving it a surreal, unexpected shadow that does not correspond to the object itself.

1 lesson

2. “Magritte: A World Turned Upside Down”

An introduction to the work of René Magritte, exploring the composition and color choices in his paintings.

3. “Altered Reality”

Creating a surreal scene by combining two real landscapes or spaces into one new, unified, and impossible world.

1-2 lessons

4. “Dalí: When the Impossible Becomes Real”

An introduction to Salvador Dalí’s artistic language and approach. You will experiment with unusual forms, scales, and the perception of space.

5. “The Impossible Object”

Creating a new surreal character or object by combining two or more real objects into one unexpected artistic form.

6. “Contemporary Surrealism”

Exploring the work of contemporary artists and experimenting with different forms of artistic expression, with a focus on color, light, and painterly texture.

7. “The Inner Image”

Creating a surreal composition inspired by your personal associations, emotions, memories, and symbols.

1-2 lessons

8. “My Surreal World”

A final independent project bringing together the artistic techniques explored throughout the course and developing your own individual visual language.

2-3 lessons
